Adopting FIBO – a Practical Approach

Everybody agrees that having a common, consistent data model for the financial services industry is a good idea. A lack of common meaning across systems means that organizations don’t trust their own data, and regulatory pressures such as BCBS 239 are pushing the industry in the direction of common semantics. However, information architects and data scientists have to convince executive leadership that FIBO represents a good way of moving forward.

In this presentation we will explore approaches to put FIBO to work to solve real-world business problems in operations, regulatory compliance and customer relations.

We will demonstrate FIBO-V in the Semaphore cloud platform for semantics and make the URL available for the audience to use after the conference.

Toby Conrad is a Smartlogic co-founder as well as the senior vice president for North America. He has 10 years of experience in semantic technologies and more than 15 years of experience working in consultative engagements concerning information governance, enterprise search and analytics. Toby specializes in advising financial and banking clients, as well as working with a broad range of organizations across multiple industries, including KPMG, Target, Husky Energy, NASA, Bank of America, GSK and many more. When Toby isn't helping create effective information management solutions or other semantic systems, you can find him riding his motorbike, mountain bike or snowboard.

Stuart Laurie brings over 14 years of experience in information science and content strategy. He has worked on major information and knowledge management projects utilizing semantic technologies, text analytics, and search in a wide variety of business sectors. In his 11+ year tenure with Smartlogic Stuart has overseen the successful roll-out of dozens of projects to Global 500 organizations including CNN, HP, Best Buy, International Monetary Fund, and Merck. In his current role he provides consulting on the design and implementation of taxonomies, ontologies and classification configuration to support deployment of key client applications, including Information Governance, Records Management, Content Management and Search across a wide variety of enterprise technologies. Stuart has a Bachelor of Science (BSc); Chemistry and Computer Science from the University of Reading and resides in San Jose, CA.
