This session will cover the differences between relational and NoSQL document database models and the reasons why developers prefer multi-schema NoSQL data stores over relational ones. With this background we'll provide some examples of varying levels of normalization in a JSON document database context. This provides attendees with ideas for modeling compromises that minimize data quality issues and account for data governance objectives. The students will gain the following:
  1. Be exposed to the object-oriented versus relational divide, called the object-relational impedance mismatch
  2. Introduction to data modeling in JSON documents as opposed to relational form
  3. Understanding of the object-oriented developer's perspective and possible governance principals that mitigate friction between relational and non-relational developers/proponents
  4. Overview of techniques and tools used to document JSON document models (getting at the golden BigMetadata)


Dan Myers (MBA, IQCP) is the principal educator of Data Quality Matters, an eLearning company focused on providing information and data quality learning material. Previously Dan worked as an applications developer, data modeler, and manager of data governance/data quality. Dan's fluency in Japanese enabled him to work in both the public and private sector in Japan.
